How do I identify a Georgian tea table?

Georgian tea tables exhibit restrained proportions, solid timber construction, and precise carving on the legs or pedestal base. Look for hand-cut dovetails and traditional timber shrinkage. Earlier pieces often display tripod bases with pad feet, while later Georgian examples favour square tapered legs or spade feet.

Where should I place a tea table today?

A tea table works exceptionally well behind a sofa as a slim console or positioned beside a chair as an occasional surface. Their shallow depth suits hallways and narrower reception rooms. Keeping the timber away from direct heat sources ensures the polished mahogany surface maintains its natural lustre.

What distinguishes figured mahogany from plain mahogany?

Figured mahogany exhibits natural grain patterns such as ripples, swirls, and flame effects that catch the light from different angles. Plain mahogany presents a uniform, straight grain without optical movement. Cabinet makers reserved the highly figured veneers for the main top surfaces and drawer fronts of superior tables.
