What subjects appear in these paintings?

The works record coastal views, harbours, rural farmyards, and town squares. Still life arrangements of flowers and domestic interiors also feature regularly. Artists frequently painted scenes from Normandy, Brittany, and various British coastal locations, documenting everyday life and landscapes.

How should I frame and hang an oil painting?

Many works arrive in period wooden or gilt frames that suit the mid-century or early twentieth-century aesthetic. Ensure you hang them away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to protect the oil paint and canvas. Secure fixings suited to the weight of the specific wooden panel or canvas frame to keep the artwork stable on the wall.

How do I identify the period of a piece?

Dates often appear alongside signatures on the front or written on the reverse of the canvas, board, or wood panel. Stylistic cues such as heavy impasto or specific modernist palettes also point toward the nineteen tens through to the nineteen sixties. Artist biographies and exhibition dates provide further confirmation for works produced within the early and mid-twentieth century.

What is the difference between canvas and board supports?

Canvas offers a flexible textile surface stretched over a wooden frame, which yields slightly to the touch. Board provides a rigid, flat panel made of wood, card, or composite material that does not flex. Both supports accommodated oil paint effectively during the post-impressionist era, though boards were particularly favoured for rapid sketches and plein-air painting.
