What is a pine settle with storage?

A pine settle with storage is a traditional wooden bench featuring a high back to block draughts and a concealed compartment beneath the seat. These pieces were historically used in kitchens, hallways, and taverns for both sitting and keeping household goods. Most examples seen here date from the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras, coming from both English workshops and Hungarian rural traditions.

Where were settles placed in the home?

Settles traditionally stood near the hearth in kitchens or living rooms where their high backs protected occupants from cold draughts. The underseat storage held items like blankets, fuel, or dry goods. Today, they function well in hallways, boot rooms, and large kitchens, offering practical seating alongside concealed storage space.

What is the difference between pitch pine and regular pine?

Pitch pine is a denser, heavier softwood with a pronounced grain pattern and high resin content, making it exceptionally durable for large furniture. Regular pine is lighter in weight and softer, commonly used in general vernacular furniture. Both materials take wax and paint finishes differently, with pitch pine often showing a deeper amber tone over time.
