How do I clean bronze vases?

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth to protect the historic surface patination. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or metal polishes that strip original finishes. Keeping them away from direct sunlight and moisture preserves the underlying metal and any applied gilt or painted details.

Were these used for flowers?

Most of these symmetrical decorative vessels served as architectural ornaments on mantelpieces, sideboards, or pedestals rather than utilitarian flower holders. Their heavy cast metal or mounted porcelain construction made them ideal for formal interior display. Some variations were later converted into table lamps with wiring running through the centre.

How do I tell French from English pieces?

French examples often lean towards Rococo Revival, Louis XVI style, or Sevres porcelain combinations with intricate gilt mounts. English works frequently reflect classical revival tastes and sturdy domestic casting traditions. Examining the assembly methods and foundry marks helps identify the likely country of origin.

What is the difference between bronze and spelter?

Bronze is a heavy, durable copper alloy that takes a deep, stable patina over centuries of handling. Spelter is a lighter, softer zinc-based metal that mimics bronze appearance but feels less substantial. Testing weight and inspecting the underside often reveals the softer nature of spelter.
