What is a mantle vase?

A mantle vase is an ornamental ceramic vessel specifically proportioned to sit on a fireplace mantelpiece. These pieces were created to add colour and formal decoration to the primary hearth area of a nineteenth-century home. They often formed part of a matched pair or a larger garniture set that included side urns or a central clock. The narrow profile of many mantle vases allowed them to sit securely on shallow architectural shelves.

How were garniture sets used?

Garniture sets were arranged symmetrically across mantelpieces, pier tables, or large sideboards to create a balanced decorative display. The central piece usually stood taller, flanked by matching smaller vases or urns. While some vessels were functional containers for dried flowers or spill lights, many served purely as sculptural objects intended to demonstrate the homeowner's taste and wealth through fine porcelain and gilding.

What is Old Paris porcelain?

Old Paris porcelain refers to the diverse body of ceramic wares produced by numerous independent studios and small factories operating in and around Paris during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These pieces often lack standard factory marks. They are recognised by their bright colour palettes, extensive use of heavy gilding, and neoclassical or romantic motifs moulded into substantial ceramic bodies.
