Are these wardrobes suitable for modern hangers?

Many nineteenth-century wardrobes were built for shallower garments or antique hooks rather than wide contemporary coat hangers. You may need to check the internal depth front-to-back before hanging modern suits. Some pieces easily accommodate modern brass rails fitted into the original side brackets without altering the historic structure of the timber.

How should I clean painted surfaces?

Painted antique wood requires gentle maintenance using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to lift dust without disturbing delicate or crazed pigment layers. Avoid household detergents or soaking moisture, which can soften historic oil and water-based paints. If the paintwork is unsealed, consult a specialist conservator before applying any wax or protective polish to prevent darkening the original finish.

What is the difference between an armoire and a compactum?

An armoire is primarily designed for hanging garments behind large double doors, offering an open internal drop space. It focuses on vertical clearance for coats and dresses. A compactum splits the interior volume by dividing the width, integrating small drawers and shelving columns alongside a narrower hanging section to maximise multi-purpose bedroom storage.
