How do I hang a heavy carved mirror safely?

Large carved wooden frames require robust wall fixings anchored directly into masonry or secure wall studs. Using a professional mirror hanger or a heavy-duty battens system ensures the weight distributes evenly without straining the ancient joints. Position the mirror at a height that reflects natural light from windows or counterbalances surrounding furniture. Ensure the wall structure can support the combined weight of the timber, gesso, and glass before final placement.

What periods do these mirrors represent?

The pieces span from the 17th century through the Georgian and Victorian eras up to the 1930s. Styles range from Baroque and Chippendale to French Rococo Revival and Spanish designs. Each period brings distinct carving depths, framing profiles, and gilding techniques to the surface. Reviewing the listed dates helps trace how scrollwork evolved from symmetrical Baroque heaviness to fluid Rococo asymmetry.

How should I clean a gilded frame?

Dust the delicate carved scrolls gently using a soft, dry artist's brush or a feather duster. Avoid using water, chemical sprays, or abrasive cloths, which can lift the fragile gold leaf and gesso. For the glass plate, apply a mild glass cleaner to a soft cloth rather than spraying directly onto the surface. This prevents moisture from seeping behind the glass and damaging the backing or the wooden rebate.

What is an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror is a large horizontal wall mirror specifically proportioned to hang above a fireplace mantelpiece. These pieces often reflect the width of the fireplace surround and anchor the room's decorative scheme. Victorian and Georgian examples frequently incorporate ornate scrollwork and gilded frames to amplify light from the hearth. They serve as architectural centrepieces within formal reception rooms and living spaces.
