How do I wire antique wall lights for modern electricity?

Most of these fixtures were originally configured for candles and require professional rewiring to meet current electrical standards. A qualified electrician can thread modern internal flex through the existing arms without damaging the historical metalwork. Wall mounting plates usually require secure fixing to wall studs or appropriate masonry plugs to support the weight of heavy bronze or brass bodies.

What is the difference between ormolu and gilt bronze?

Ormolu is a historical term specifically denoting the application of finely ground gold mercury to a bronze base, creating a distinct warm lustre. Gilt bronze is a broader descriptive term for bronze that has been coated in gold by any method. In practical antique terminology, both descriptions refer to the same golden metallic surface treatment found on high-end French wall fixtures.

How should I clean gilded metal wall lights?

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to prevent the accumulation of dirt in recessed crevices. Liquid metal cleaners and aggressive polishes will strip away thin layers of historical gilding. Preserving the original surface patina maintains both the visual depth and the historical integrity of the piece.

Are these lights usually sold in pairs?

Many listings feature matching pairs or larger coordinated sets of four or six to allow balanced placement on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or doorway. Single pieces also appear, often suited for smaller wall spaces or nooks. Symmetrical arrangement remains a traditional method for displaying decorative wall sconces in domestic interiors.
