How do I display an oriental cloisonne display plate safely?

These chargers and plaques benefit from sturdy wall mounting brackets specifically designed for heavy metal and enamel objects. Alternatively, heavy tabletop display stands support the base securely while keeping the surface visible. Avoid placing these plates in areas with direct, harsh sunlight or extreme humidity fluctuations. Gentle handling prevents accidental impacts that might chip the vitreous enamel surface.

How are Japanese and Chinese cloisonne plates distinguished?

Japanese plates from the Meiji and Edo periods frequently utilise fine copper or brass wires to outline naturalistic subjects like birds, fish and Mount Fuji. The enamel colours tend towards subtle shaded palettes and asymmetrical compositions. Chinese examples, such as those from the Qing dynasty, often employ heavier bronze or brass bases with bolder wirework and more symmetrical, symbolic ornamentation. The background colours in Qing pieces frequently rely on turquoise or deep blue tones.

What is Totai Shippo?

Totai Shippo translates to bodyless or transparent cloisonne, where the artisan creates decorative effects without traditional opaque cell walls or by using a porcelain core. This technique allows light to filter through the enamel design. Plates utilising this method display a distinctive translucent quality that sets them apart from standard copper-backed cloisonne chargers.

How do I clean an antique cloisonne plate?

Maintenance requires only a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust from the wire and enamel surface. Avoid using chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes or immersion in water, as these substances can damage the metal wires and aged enamel. Regular, gentle dusting preserves the polished finish and protects the integrity of the metallic cells.

Why are some plates signed?

Master artisans and esteemed workshops occasionally inscribed their signatures or marks onto the base or reverse of exceptional chargers. These signatures denote the pride of the maker and often correspond to high-grade Meiji period production. Unsigned pieces remain common, as many fine workshops produced high-quality decorative plates without personal ciphers.
