How do I clean an old oak dresser?

Dust the surfaces regularly with a dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in the grain. Apply a traditional beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber without leaving a heavy film. Avoid using modern liquid polishes or silicone sprays, as these chemicals penetrate the wood pores and damage historic finishes. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from splitting.

Can these dressers support heavy dinnerware?

These pieces were originally built to hold heavy stoneware, pewter, and earthenware during daily use. The sturdy potboards and plate racks provide substantial weight-bearing capacity. However, you should check the stability of the wall fixings if the upper rack carries significant weight. Distribute heavier serving platters on the lower shelves of the base for optimal balance.

Where should I place a dresser in my home?

A kitchen or dining room serves as the traditional location where these pieces function most effectively. They offer practical storage while keeping tableware within easy reach for daily meals. Ensure the room maintains a stable humidity level to protect older timbers from warping. Allow sufficient clearance around the base cupboards and drawers so they open without obstruction.

Are potboard bases used differently from cupboards?

Potboards provide open storage beneath the main counter surface rather than concealing items behind panelled doors. This layout allowed historical households to store large pots where air could circulate freely around them. In modern rooms, this lower shelf functions well for displaying large decorative objects or baskets. It creates a lighter visual footprint than a fully enclosed heavy base.
