What is an oak dresser base?

A dresser base is a low-standing unit equipped with drawers and cupboards, traditionally used in dining rooms or kitchens for storing tableware and provisions. Unlike tall display cabinets, these pieces provide a flat surface top suitable for serving food or displaying decorative items.

How do I identify a Georgian chest of drawers?

Georgian chests typically feature straightforward proportions, bracket or ogee feet, and straightforward drawer configurations such as two short drawers over three long ones. They often use golden oak timber and hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction.

Pollard oak comes from trees that were pruned close to the trunk to create dense, highly textured wood grain patterns. Cabinetmakers utilised this striking timber for drawer fronts and decorative panels on high-status Victorian sideboards.

How should I care for antique oak furniture?

Maintain antique oak by applying natural beeswax sparingly and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying and cracking. Keep the pieces away from direct heat sources to preserve the historic patina and polish.
