Are these vases converted to lamps?

Many mounted famille rose vases function as table lamps, having been wired for electricity while retaining their original ceramic bodies. This conversion often occurred decades after the porcelain was first imported. Buyers can find both dedicated display vessels and pieces equipped for lighting, depending on how the previous owners chose to utilise them in domestic spaces.

How do I date these pieces?

Dating relies on examining the characteristics of the porcelain body, the style of the enamel painting, and the casting quality of the metal mounts. Nineteenth-century examples frequently show specific Qing dynasty export traits. Later pieces from the early twentieth century or European revival makers like Samson often exhibit slight differences in weight, glaze texture, and pigment vibrancy.

What is Rose Medallion?

Rose Medallion is a specific subcategory of Cantonese export porcelain defined by segmented panels filled with figures and birds. The palette relies heavily on pink enamel alongside gilt detailing. This style became immensely popular in Western homes during the Victorian era, leading to the durable pairing of these vases with European ormolu mounts.

How do I clean mounted vases?

Dusting the porcelain and metal mounts regularly with a soft, dry cloth preserves the painted enamels and the gilt surfaces. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive materials. If the piece is wired as a lamp, ensure it is unplugged before undertaking any maintenance, and take care around delicate ormolu joints and fabric components.
