What is a kidney table used for?

These pieces function as writing desks, dressing tables, and occasional side surfaces depending on their fitted drawers and height. The curved indentation allows the user to sit comfortably close to the centre. They appear in studies, bedrooms, and reception rooms as both working desks and decorative display stands for smaller objects.

How do I date a mahogany kidney table?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, timber characteristics, and construction methods associated with periods such as the Edwardian era, Victorian period, and Regency style. Edwardian examples often feature light satinwood inlay and Sheraton Revival motifs. Nineteenth-century pieces tend to show heavier proportions and darker finishes, while maker stamps or labels occasionally provide exact workshop origins.

Are these tables sturdy?

Construction quality determines stability, with well-joined legs and solid mahogany frames supporting daily use as writing desks or occasional stands. Pieces with multiple tiers or fitted pedestals distribute weight evenly across the footprint. Delicate Edwardian versions require sensible placement away from heavy traffic to protect fine inlaid stringing and slender legs.

What is flame mahogany?

Flame mahogany is a decorative veneer harvested from the junction where branches meet the main tree trunk. This specific cut creates dramatic, undulating patterns resembling flickering flames across the surface. Cabinet makers reserved this striking wood for the primary tabletops and drawer fronts of finer pieces.
