How do I date a mahogany mirror?

Dating relies on construction methods, timber thickness, and the style of the frame moulding. Georgian pieces often display hand-cut fretwork and thinner backboards, while Edwardian examples frequently incorporate machine-cut veneers and satinwood inlay. Examining the fixings, screw types, and the composition of the mirror glass itself provides further clues to the period of manufacture.

Are these mirrors heavy to hang?

Many Victorian and Georgian pieces carry considerable weight due to solid timber frames and thick glass plates. Proper wall anchors and sturdy picture wire attached to original brackets are essential for secure hanging. Distributing the load across multiple wall studs prevents damage to older framing joints.

How should I care for the wood?

Maintaining the mahogany involves dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding modern silicone-based polishes that build up over time. Natural wax applied sparingly preserves the lustre of the grain. Keeping the mirror away from direct sunlight and damp environments protects both the timber frame and the silvering on the glass.
