How do I date a mahogany desk accessory?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers such as Georgian proportions, Victorian gothic revival motifs, or Edwardian inlaid details. Construction methods and patent marks also help establish the era of manufacture. Changes in hardware, such as brass mounting styles and mechanical patents, provide further clues for narrowing down the period.

What were postal scales used for?

Postal scales measured the weight of letters and small parcels to determine correct postage rates before dispatch. They were standard equipment on nineteenth century writing desks. The sets typically included calibrated brass weights stored in fitted recesses within the mahogany base.

How do I care for mahogany desk accessories?

Keep wooden surfaces away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the mahogany from drying out or splitting. Gentle dusting and occasional wax application maintain the finish. Brass mounts can be cleaned carefully with a soft cloth while avoiding harsh abrasives that might damage the surrounding timber.
