What is a demi lune table used for?

These pieces function primarily as console or side tables placed against flat walls in hallways, drawing rooms, and landings. Fold-over versions also serve as card or tea tables when opened for entertaining. Their compact half-moon shape allows them to occupy minimal floor space while providing a useful surface for lamps, ornaments, or serving.

How do I identify a Georgian demi lune table?

Georgian examples typically exhibit solid or figured mahogany construction, often enhanced with subtle boxwood stringing or satinwood inlay. Look for hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction and tapered spade legs. Earlier pieces from the mid-eighteenth century may feature rich Cuban mahogany timber and simpler, robust proportions before lighter satinwood details became fashionable towards the end of the century.

Can I use a demi lune table as a desk?

Most demi lune tables lack the knee clearance and depth required for comfortable seating as a regular writing desk. They are better suited for occasional display or as a decorative surface in reception areas. Card and tea table variations provide a larger surface area when opened, but their folding leaves are generally designed for games rather than sustained daily writing work.

Are mahogany demi lune tables found in pairs?

Pairs appear frequently in the record, having been originally commissioned to stand either side of a doorway, fireplace, or large architectural window. Matching pairs command significant interest from collectors seeking symmetry in formal room layouts. Single tables are equally common, functioning effectively as standalone pier tables or hallway accents.
