What is a lion head planter?

A lion head planter is a decorative vessel for plants or wine featuring cast or hammered feline mask ornamentation. These pieces reflect historic periods from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century across various European styles.

How were brass jardinières used?

Brass jardinières served primarily as indoor plant holders to bring greenery into domestic drawing rooms and parlours. Some heavy metal versions also functioned as wine coolers, holding ice and bottles during formal dining occasions.

How do I identify a Victorian planter?

Victorian examples typically present heavy brass construction, often incorporating classical mask handles and robust proportions suited to nineteenth-century interiors. Comparing the manufacturing technique, such as cast brass versus sheet metal, helps establish the period context.

Can these planters be used outdoors?

Most antique metal and ceramic jardinières were designed for interior display rather than harsh modern garden environments. Protecting delicate glazes and thin copper bodies from frost ensures these historical vessels survive intact.
