How do I identify a genuine period library chair?

Examine the secondary timbers beneath the upholstery and check the hand-tooling on the leather surfaces. Period pieces display traditional joinery and timber patination consistent with their stated age. Look closely at the leg turning and the wear patterns on the arms, which reveal genuine handling over generations.

Were these chairs intended for desks or reading?

Both functions exist within this category, with desk chairs often featuring lower backs and revolving or castor-fitted bases. Reading chairs and library armchairs prioritise wider seats and supportive padded arms for prolonged relaxation. Heavier club chairs were designed for communal sitting rooms rather than task-based study.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Maintain the hide by avoiding direct sunlight and keeping it away from heat sources that dry out natural oils. Gentle cleaning with appropriate leather balms preserves the suppleness of nineteenth-century and older surfaces. Check the underlying webbing periodically to ensure the seat support remains stable during regular use.

What is the difference between a club chair and a wingback?

Club chairs offer low, rounded backs and deep upholstered cushioning designed for relaxed lounging. Wingbacks incorporate high side panels intended to retain heat and block room draughts. Both types utilise durable leather upholstery, but their silhouettes serve distinct placement needs in a room.
