What is a carriage clock?

A carriage clock is a small, spring-driven mechanical clock built for portability during travel. They typically feature a glass-panelled metal case and a folding handle on top. Originally developed in the nineteenth century, these timepieces allowed travellers to keep accurate time away from home before the widespread use of pocket watches.

How do you wind a carriage clock?

Winding requires a dedicated key inserted into the winding arbors located on the backplate of the movement. Care must be taken not to overwind the mainspring. Most surviving examples run for eight days on a full wind, requiring attention roughly once a week to maintain accurate timekeeping.
