How do I identify a genuine period frame?

Period frames from the late 1700s typically feature hand-carved wooden mouldings finished with genuine gold leaf over a prepared gesso layer. Examination of the corner joints and the backboards often reveals the construction methods and ageing consistent with the Georgian era. Later replacements or reproductions often display modern fixings, synthetic gilding, or cast composition ornaments that lack the crisp detail of period hand-worked carvings.

Were these works always painted on canvas?

While canvas became the standard support for larger portraits and landscapes, artists frequently utilised alternative materials depending on the scale and regional tradition. Wood panels, particularly oak, were common for smaller cabinet paintings and Northern European works. Works on paper, including watercolours and gouache, were also prevalent for topographical views and preparatory sketches. Each material required specific preparation to ensure the longevity of the pigments.

How should I care for an antique oil painting?

Protecting these fragile works involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on both the canvas and the decorative gilt frame preserves the integrity of the original materials. Professional conservation assessments can address surface grime or varnish discolouration safely without disturbing the underlying artist's touch.

What distinguishes regional British schools from continental works?

Regional British and Scottish schools often focused on domestic landscapes, local topography, and intimate portraiture reflecting Georgian society. Continental works, particularly from French and Dutch schools, frequently incorporated classical motifs, dramatic lighting, or maritime themes influenced by distinct European traditions. Stylistic cues, costume details, and framing techniques provide further clues to the geographic origin of anonymous pieces.
