Where were landscape glass panels originally hung?

These panels typically served as interior architectural elements, positioned above fireplaces as overmantel mirrors or placed between windows as pier mirrors. Stained glass windows and door panels were integrated directly into domestic interiors to introduce pastoral scenery and natural light into hallways and principal rooms.

How do I care for antique glass panels?

Clean the glass surfaces gently with a soft cloth and a mild, ammonia-free solution to protect historic painted details and silvering. Avoid applying excessive moisture near lead cames and wooden frames, ensuring the structural stability of giltwood and timber surrounds remains undisturbed.

Are these panels suitable for exterior installation?

Historic leaded and painted glass panels are designed primarily for internal display rather than exposed exterior architectural use. Placing them inside protects the fragile hand-painted countryside scenes from weather damage. Interior wall mounting or hanging them behind a light source allows the decorative painted glass to be appreciated safely.

How can I tell a Regency panel from a later piece?

Regency pieces often utilise specific framing conventions such as acanthus-decorated columns and eglomise glass panels. The proportions tend to be neat, favouring classical architectural lines. Later pieces from the early twentieth century frequently adopt Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau aesthetics with pictorial leaded window designs.
