What is a kingwood marquetry commode?

A kingwood marquetry commode is an ornamental chest of drawers originating primarily from French cabinet-making traditions, characterised by patterned wood veneers and marble tops. These pieces were designed for formal rooms to display wealth while offering enclosed storage.

How do I tell Louis XV and Louis XVI styles apart?

Louis XV pieces rely on asymmetrical curves, flowing serpentine shapes, and prominent bombe profiles with elaborate ormolu mounts. Louis XVI pieces introduce straighter lines, neoclassical symmetry, and more restrained geometric parquetry or floral arrangements.

Are these commodes suitable for modern bedrooms?

Their compact proportions and flat marble surfaces make them practical bedside tables or decorative storage cabinets in contemporary spaces. The combination of wood tones and polished stone allows them to sit easily alongside modern furnishings.

What maintenance do marble tops require?

Marble surfaces need simple wiping with a damp cloth and gentle soap to avoid staining from liquids or cosmetics. Harsh acidic cleaners should be avoided to preserve the polished finish of the stone.
