What is a bureau plat used for?

A bureau plat functions as a freestanding writing desk intended for placement in the middle of a room. Historically, it served correspondence and administrative tasks while displaying the owner's taste through decorative veneers and mounts.

How do I identify a kingwood bureau plat?

Identification relies on recognising the characteristic violet-brown striped grain of kingwood combined with a flat leather-inset top and gilt bronze mounts. Most examples date from the nineteenth-century revival periods and follow Louis XV or Louis XVI aesthetic conventions.

Are these desks freestanding?

These tables are finished on all sides so they can stand in open spaces without facing a wall. Drawers are typically integrated into the frieze while the reverse side maintains matching veneer and mount decoration.

What styles influence these tables?

French rococo and neoclassical movements inspire the design vocabulary, particularly the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Nineteenth-century workshops reinterpreted these historical models with elaborate marquetry and ormolu detailing.
