What is a japanned occasional table?

A japanned occasional table is a small, movable piece of furniture finished with European lacquer and decorative painting that imitates Asian export lacquerware. These tables were designed for general use in reception rooms, drawing rooms, and parlours. They appear in various forms, including wine tables, nests of tables, tray tables, and sewing stands. The decorative schemes typically feature black, red, or ebonised grounds adorned with gold leaf Chinoiserie motifs.

How were these tables used?

These tables served flexible purposes in domestic interiors, holding lamps, sewing materials, playing cards, or tea services. Because they were lightweight and portable, servants could move them around the room as needed. Nesting tables provided extra surface area for guests during gatherings and stacked compactly when not in use. Tilt-top models were pushed against walls to clear floor space during the day.

How do I date a japanned table?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction, the composition of the lacquer, and the stylistic cues of the frame and decoration. Georgian and Regency pieces exhibit different structural joinery and proportions compared to Victorian or Edwardian revivals. Materials also offer clues, as tiger bamboo and papier-mache frames became particularly widespread during the Victorian and Aesthetic Movement periods. Later 20th-century reproductions often lack the hand-mixed pigments and depth of earlier lacquer layers.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

Most occasional tables are structurally capable of holding light everyday items like books, cups, or lamps. However, delicate surfaces such as aged papier-mache or bamboo require careful handling to avoid surface scratching. Placing them away from direct sunlight and excessive heat protects the lacquer and gold leaf from cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient for ongoing maintenance.
