How do I fold an Indian folding side table?

Most tables utilise an interlocking wooden X-frame that collapses flat once the top is removed or unlatched. Lift the top gently from its base and slide or fold the wooden lattice inward. Take care not to force the hinges or wooden pivots if the piece has settled over decades. Align the grain and joints properly before attempting to pack or store the frame flat.

Were these tables made for export?

Many tables from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were produced specifically for British colonial residents and the European export market. They combined traditional local craftsmanship with forms suited to Western drawing rooms. Campaign versions also served military officers and travellers who required portable furniture that packed flat for long journeys. This dual heritage explains the mix of traditional motifs and familiar occasional table shapes.

How do I clean brass and bone inlay?

Dust the carved wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry brush to prevent dirt settling in the recesses. Avoid using liquid polishes on inlaid brass or copper, as moisture can stain the surrounding timber. Bone and mother of pearl sections require gentle care with a dry cloth. Excessive cleaning agents can loosen small inlay pieces from their wooden channels.

How do I date an Indian folding side table?

Examine the timber, construction methods, and hardware to establish a reliable age bracket. Pieces dating to the Victorian period often display dense hand carving and traditional brass pin fixings. Later examples from the early twentieth century may show slightly different joinery or machine assistance in the base construction. Comparing the specific inlay materials and decorative motifs against known regional styles helps narrow the production window.
