What is a heavy iron door porter?

A heavy iron door porter is a portable sculptural weight designed to keep interior doors open. They combine practical utility with decorative subjects. These pieces sit on the floor against the door base, utilising their substantial weight to prevent swinging in draughty hallways.

They were positioned against heavy wooden doors in grand houses and domestic rooms to hold them open during the day. Their mass kept doors stationary without requiring permanent fixings. Servants moved them from room to room as ventilation needs changed throughout the household.

How do I date a cast iron doorstop?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, historical subjects and manufacturing characteristics associated with periods from the Georgian era to the Edwardian period. Examining the wear on the base and any remaining paint layers also helps. Subjects like Lord Nelson or specific Victorian figures provide clear chronological anchors for the design.

Are all door porters made of iron?

Whilst the majority consist entirely of cast iron, some examples incorporate brass elements or retain painted finishes. The primary material remains iron due to the weight required for the function. Certain pieces combine cast iron bodies with brass handles or decorative fittings.
