How do I date a gold frame floral painting?

Dating relies on examining the stretcher frames, the backing materials, and the style of the gesso moulding on the border. Canvas types and pigment chemistry also offer clues to the era of creation. Changes in artistic conventions, from Victorian realism to mid-century impressionism, help narrow the decade in which the floral study was painted.

Are these paintings usually oil on canvas?

Many examples utilise oil paint applied to woven canvas or wood board, though watercolours, gouache on paper, and painted silk also appear. The medium often dictates how the piece is housed, with heavier oils traditionally requiring sturdy timber and gesso frames.

How should I hang a heavy gilded frame?

Large gilded wooden frames carry considerable weight and require secure wall fixings anchored directly into wall studs or solid masonry. Using picture wire rated well above the weight of the piece ensures the frame remains safely supported over time.

Can frames and paintings be cleaned safely?

Surface dust on canvas can be gently removed using a soft, dry artist brush, avoiding any moisture or chemical solvents on the paint. Gilded gesso frames require extreme caution, as moisture and vigorous wiping can strip the delicate gold leaf finish.
