How do I wire an antique lamp?

Rewiring involves replacing old internal cords with modern insulated cable to meet current safety standards. A qualified electrician can thread the new wire through the central channel without altering the exterior wood. Retaining the original lampholder is sometimes possible, but modern brass or ceramic fittings inside ensure safe daily operation.

What is a torchere lamp?

A torchere is a tall, slender standing lamp designed to direct light upward toward the ceiling. These pieces evolved from early stands that held candles. Many examples feature elaborate carved figures or fluted columns that elevate the light source significantly above floor level.

How do I clean giltwood?

Giltwood requires gentle maintenance using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster to remove surface dust. Moisture and chemical cleaners damage the delicate gold leaf and underlying gesso. Professional restoration is necessary if the surface shows flaking or structural loss of the metallic leaf.

Are these lamps stable?

Floor lamps rely on a substantial weighted base or broad feet to maintain balance on carpets and hard flooring. Heavier carved wood and brass internal weighting keep the tall standards upright. Placement in high-traffic areas requires care to avoid accidental knocks against the vertical shaft.
