Are these original antique lamps?

Most pieces combine antique ceramic vessels or lacquered wood standards with subsequent electrical conversions. The base bodies originate from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lamp fittings and wiring are updated for modern domestic use while retaining the historic decorative elements.

How do I identify a Regency piece?

Regency items display classical European mounts combined with scarlet japanned finishes or specific porcelain forms. These date to the early nineteenth century or later revivals. Look for heavy brass detailing and classical furniture proportions in the floor standards and wall lanterns.

What is japanned wood?

Japanning is a European lacquer technique mimicking Asian export goods. Layers of dark varnish receive painted gilt figures and landscapes. This finish appears frequently on floor lamps and standards from the Edwardian era and the nineteen-thirties.

Can I change the lamp shades?

Shades can be replaced to suit interior schemes, provided the fitting matches the bulb holder. Many listings include handmade fabric shades designed for the specific lamp height. Ensure any replacement shade complements the scale of the ceramic vase or floor standard.
