How do I date a gilded frame?

Dating relies upon examining the construction methods of the wooden substrate, the composition of the gesso layer, and the style of the decorative moulding. Earlier frames often feature hand-carved wooden details, whereas later nineteenth-century examples frequently utilise moulded composition ornaments. Examining the reverse side reveals joinery techniques, corner blocks, and fixing methods that correspond to specific historical periods. Combining these physical clues with the stylistic traits of the artwork helps establish an accurate timeframe.

Are oil paintings on canvas stable?

Oil paintings on canvas remain remarkably stable when kept away from excessive moisture, direct sunlight, and wide fluctuations in temperature. The flexible nature of canvas allows it to accommodate minor environmental shifts without immediate structural failure. Over long periods, the canvas tension may loosen slightly, or the paint layer may develop fine networks of cracks known as craquelure. These natural ageing signs do not inherently threaten the stability of the piece provided the support remains sound.

How should I clean a giltwood frame?

Cleaning giltwood requires minimal intervention, primarily restricted to gently removing surface dust with a very soft, dry brush. Moisture and standard household cleaning agents must be avoided entirely to prevent dissolving the delicate water-gilding or oil-gilding layers. Because historic gold leaf is exceptionally thin and vulnerable to abrasion, any accumulated grime that resists light dusting should be assessed by a professional conservator. Rubbing the surface can permanently strip away the metallic finish.

What is the difference between an oil painting and a watercolour?

Oil paintings utilise pigment bound in drying oils applied to opaque supports like canvas or wood panels, allowing for rich texture and reworkable layers. Watercolours employ water-soluble pigments applied to paper, producing luminous, transparent washes where the white paper ground shines through. Due to their sensitivity to light and moisture, watercolours are invariably displayed behind glass with protective mounts. Oil paintings on canvas possess greater inherent resilience and are traditionally exhibited unglazed.

How do portrait miniatures differ from standard paintings?

Portrait miniatures are distinguished by their exceptionally small scale, often designed to be held in the hand or worn as personal mementos. They require meticulous brushwork executed with microscopic precision using fine sable brushes. Unlike large oil canvases meant for distant wall viewing, miniatures invite intimate inspection. They frequently incorporate precious materials such as ivory, vellum, or fine card housed within protective cases or specialised frames.
