What is a georgian nightstand with drawers used for?

These pieces served historically to hold chamber lighting, night-time necessities, and personal items within the bedroom. Today they function perfectly as bedside tables or small lamp tables in contemporary living spaces. Their compact footprints and functional drawers provide practical enclosed storage while introducing genuine period character to smaller rooms.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Look for traditional timber selection such as solid mahogany or oak, alongside hand-cut dovetails on the drawer sides and period-appropriate brass hardware. Proportions tend to be restrained and balanced. Construction details like secondary woods used for drawer linings and hand-finished surfaces help distinguish authentic 18th-century work from later revival pieces.

What woods are most common?

Mahogany dominates the selection, ranging from standard stock to highly figured Cuban mahogany with deep red tones. Oak also appears frequently, particularly in earlier or more utilitarian formats. Satinwood and walnut feature occasionally in decorative lamp tables and inlaid occasional furniture, adding lighter colour contrast to the room.

Can I use these tables beside a modern bed?

Their modest proportions make them exceptionally well-suited for modern bedroom layouts where floor space is limited. The built-in drawers offer convenient storage for books, reading glasses, and chargers. They mix easily with contemporary interiors, bringing warmth and texture through aged timber surfaces and classic joinery.
