How were miniatures displayed?

Miniatures were often hung in intimate interior spaces, kept in carrying cases, or worn as personal jewellery close to the heart. Their portable nature allowed owners to carry likenesses of family members or notable figures during travel.

Plumbago refers to an early form of graphite drawing that yielded finely detailed monochrome portraits. Artists favoured this medium for its precision before watercolour miniatures became dominant.

How do I identify the period?

Hair styles, bonnets, and gowns provide the clearest visual markers for dating female miniatures. Frames and backing materials also help distinguish eighteenth-century pieces from later Regency or Victorian examples.

Many miniatures retain their original ebonised wood, rosewood, or gilt metal frames, sometimes accompanied by tooled leather cases. Matching the frame style to the sitter's costume helps confirm whether the housing is contemporary to the painting.
