What is the difference between a linen press and a wardrobe?

A linen press traditionally incorporates sliding shelves or trays in the upper section for folded textiles, whereas a wardrobe is designed primarily for hanging garments vertically. Many period pieces blur these distinctions as later owners converted internal tray sections into hanging space.

How do I distinguish oak pieces from mahogany ones?

Oak exhibits a heavy, visible grain with characteristic medullary rays, yielding a sturdy golden-brown tone common in earlier country furniture. Mahogany offers a denser, finer grain that takes a deep reddish-brown polish and lends itself to formal urban cabinet work.

Where were these cupboards placed in a period home?

Housekeepers' cupboards and large presses lived in hallways, service corridors or spacious bedrooms to store household provisions and linens. Corner cupboards found homes in dining rooms and parlours for china storage, while tall wardrobes sat strictly in bedchambers.

Can I paint a pine cupboard?

Many cottage pine and softwood cupboards were intended to be waxed, painted or stripped depending on domestic fashion. Historic painted finishes should be preserved, but plain pine examples tolerate modern paint applications well.
