What is a lowboy table?

A lowboy is a small table with one or more drawers, originating in the eighteenth century as a dressing or side table. These compact items typically stand on cabriole or straight legs and provide surface space combined with concealed storage.

How do I identify Georgian furniture?

Georgian furniture spans the reigns of the four Georges, identified by specific timber choices like mahogany and oak, alongside restrained classical proportions. Detailing such as bracket feet, brass swan neck handles, and modest carving helps distinguish pieces from later Victorian revivals.

Where were these tables used?

Tables with drawers served practical functions across domestic rooms, including hallways, parlours, and bedchambers. Their surfaces held lamps or writing materials while the drawers contained papers, linens, or small household items.

Are brass handles original?

Original brass handles show consistent patination, wear patterns, and appropriate fastening methods that match the age of the timber drawer front. Replacement hardware often leaves filled holes or utilises modern screw types inside the drawer box.
