How were tallboys used?

These imposing units served as principal bedroom storage for clothing, linens, and personal valuables. The stacked drawer configuration allowed households to organise garments hierarchically, keeping daily wear accessible in the wider lower drawers.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy requires a wall with sufficient vertical clearance and adequate depth to accommodate its substantial proportions. Because these chests anchor a room visually, position them against a solid wall away from direct sunlight to protect the aged timber finish.

How do I identify a Georgian period piece?

Look for structural markers such as hand-cut dovetail joints, secondary timbers like oak and pine, and traditional brass hardware. The absence of modern mechanical fasteners and the presence of natural timber shrinkage help confirm eighteenth-century origins.

What is the difference between a tallboy and a chest of drawers?

A standard chest of drawers sits at waist height as a single horizontal unit, whereas a tallboy stacks a second chest on top. This vertical doubling creates a much taller silhouette designed to increase storage capacity without expanding the footprint.
