What is a bijouterie table?

A bijouterie table is a specialised display piece featuring a glazed top and a shallow, lined compartment underneath. It was used in period drawing rooms to exhibit fans, miniatures, and small collectables. Today, these tables serve the same function, allowing collectors to showcase small treasures safely while keeping them visible.

How do I date these tables?

Dating relies on examining the timber veneers, the composition of the metal mounts, and the construction methods used inside the frame. Nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-cut dovetails and fire-gilded bronze. Later Edwardian and early twentieth-century examples tend to show machine milling and slightly different casting techniques on the brass or ormolu elements.

Where should I place an etagere?

An étagère works best in living spaces or hallways where its multi-tiered shelves can be viewed from multiple angles. Because many examples feature delicate marquetry, keeping them away from direct sunlight preserves the wood veneers. Ensure the floor is level so that multi-tiered stands remain stable, particularly when placing ceramics or glass on the upper ledges.

How do I clean ormolu mounts?

Ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation in the crevices. Avoid using commercial brass cleaners or abrasive liquids, as these can strip the remaining gold gilding from the bronze base. Professional conservation is recommended if the metalwork requires deeper cleaning or restoration.
