How do I use a bureau plat today?

A bureau plat serves exceptionally well as a freestanding writing desk or a console in a spacious hallway. Its finished back allows it to sit centrally in a room without needing placement against a wall. The inset leather top provides a durable surface for daily writing, while the frieze drawers accommodate modern stationery and desk accessories.

Where were these tables placed historically?

These tables occupied grand libraries, private studies, and formal reception rooms where elite residents conducted correspondence and displayed cultured tastes. Their finished appearance from every angle suited central placement. They functioned as practical writing desks for letters and estate management, as well as decorative display surfaces for precious objects.

How do I care for nineteenth-century veneer?

Protect antique wood surfaces by maintaining stable room humidity and avoiding direct sunlight, which fades delicate rosewood and kingwood veneers. Use dry or slightly damp microfibre cloths for routine cleaning. Apply quality beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber and maintain the natural lustre of the French polished finish without building up heavy residue.
