What is a giltwood salon chair?

A giltwood salon chair is a formal seat featuring a carved wooden frame covered in gold leaf, designed for nineteenth-century and historic drawing rooms. These pieces combine decorative woodwork with upholstered textiles to serve both functional seating and aesthetic roles in grand interiors.

How do I identify Louis XVI style?

Louis XVI style chairs are distinguished by straight, fluted legs, geometric framing, and neoclassical motifs like ribbons and acanthus leaves. This aesthetic contrasts with the earlier curved lines and asymmetrical rococo ornamentation of Louis XV designs.

Can I use these chairs daily?

Historic giltwood chairs can accommodate everyday use provided the wooden joints remain stable and the internal webbing is secure. Placing them away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity helps protect both the delicate gold leaf finish and the historical upholstery fabrics.

What is a bergere armchair?

A bergère is a wider, enclosed armchair featuring solid upholstered sides integrated directly into the padded backrest. This form emerged during the eighteenth century to offer a more comfortable and enclosed posture compared to standard open armchairs.
