How do I hang a heavy chandelier safely?

Heavy fixtures require direct attachment to ceiling joists using a steel support bracket rather than relying on standard plaster fixings. A qualified electrician should assess the load capacity before installation. Ensure the weight of the metal frame and glass components is supported independently of the electrical supply cable.

Can these antique lights use modern bulbs?

Most period fixtures accommodate modern SES or CES screw-base bulbs once rewired to current safety standards. Low-wattage LED candle bulbs replicate the output of older lighting without generating excessive heat. Consult an electrician to verify that the internal wiring matches modern voltage requirements.

How do I clean crystal drops on a light?

Remove dust with a soft feather duster before wiping individual glass drops with a mild solution of warm water and vinegar. Dry each piece with a lint-free cloth to maintain clarity. Leave delicate crystal elements attached to the frame if removing them risks damaging old wire loops.

How do I determine the right size light for a room?

Measure the length and width of the room in feet, add those figures together, and convert the total to inches to find a suitable diameter for the fixture. Ceiling height dictates the drop length so the fixture clears foot traffic while remaining a focal point. Larger spaces benefit from multi-arm chandeliers, whereas compact rooms suit triple-light fittings or lanterns.
