Where were these paintings displayed?

These works traditionally hung in drawing rooms and parlours of nineteenth-century homes, reflecting the British fascination with Italian travel. Today, they suit studies, living rooms and hallways where their classic subject matter creates a focal point.

How do I identify a nineteenth-century piece?

Nineteenth-century examples often feature traditional oil on canvas techniques with detailed architectural renderings of iconic Venetian landmarks. Signatures, framing styles and canvas preparations on the reverse also offer clues to the age of the piece.

What is the difference between oils and watercolours?

Oil paintings use thick pigments on canvas to build rich textures and deep shadows, particularly suited to capturing evening light and shimmering water. Watercolours on paper provide a delicate, luminous quality that captures the bright daytime atmosphere of the lagoon.

How should I care for a framed painting?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and damp environments to protect both the canvas pigments and the wooden frame. Dust the frame gently with a dry cloth and avoid using liquid cleaners on the painted surface.
