How do I identify the age of a maritime painting?

Examine the stretcher bars, the canvas weave, and the style of the wooden frame. Older works often feature hand-carved giltwood frames and square-cut nails on the reverse. Historical clues within the image, such as the rigging of the ships or the clothing of figures on the shore, also help narrow down the decade of creation.

What is the difference between canvas and panel paintings?

Canvas paintings utilise woven fabric stretched over a wooden frame, which yields slightly to the touch and offers a textured surface for brushstrokes. Panels consist of solid wood or board, providing a completely rigid base that often retains very fine detail. Both supports have been used for centuries, though panels frequently appear in earlier or smaller studies.

How should I care for an antique oil painting?

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and rapid temperature fluctuations to prevent the paint from cracking or the wood from warping. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without applying pressure. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or cloths on the painted canvas or the gilt frame.

Are these paintings usually sold with their original frames?

Many listings include period frames made of wood and gilt, though some works have been reframed over the centuries to suit changing tastes. The description will typically note if the frame is contemporary to the artwork. Original frames often show honest signs of age that match the wear on the canvas itself.
