How do I date an old canvas?

Dating relies on examining the preparation layers, the weave of the fabric, and the stretcher frame construction behind the painting. Material analysis and stylistic clues help narrow down the period of creation. Historical oil paintings often bear dealer marks, canvas stamps, or inscriptions on the reverse that provide clues to their exact origin and age.

Are these works original or copies?

The selection includes both original period compositions and historic works created in the manner of or after established masters. Many eighteenth and nineteenth-century artists painted interpretations of famous Renaissance and Baroque works as part of their training. Documentation and stylistic analysis help distinguish between direct copies by known circles and original school pieces from the period.

How should I hang a giltwood frame?

Giltwood frames are heavy and require secure wall fixings, preferably anchored directly into wall studs or masonry using appropriate weight-rated hardware. Professional hanging ensures the substantial frame is safely supported. Positioning the painting away from direct sunlight and dramatic temperature fluctuations protects both the delicate canvas and the carved wooden frame.
