Why do campaign chests come in two sections?

Two-part construction allowed officers and travellers to split the weight and bulk of the furniture for easier packing and transport on ships or wagons. Once reached at a destination, the two sections stacked neatly together to form a full-height chest of drawers.

What woods are used for these chests?

Makers relied on dense hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, and camphor wood to endure the rigours of colonial travel. Each timber offered specific benefits, from the insect resistance of camphor to the structural strength of mahogany and teak.

How do flush handles work?

Flush handles are hinged grips set into a recessed metal or wood dish on the drawer front. Purchasers pull the handle out to use it, and the spring or gravity drops it back level with the surface when released.

Are these chests heavy?

Solid hardwoods and heavy brass mounts make these chests substantial pieces of furniture. Their sectional design manages the weight by dividing the load into smaller, more portable modules.
