What is a mule chest?

A mule chest is a traditional storage piece that combines the deep lidded compartment of a coffer with one or more drawers built into the base. This hybrid design appeared as makers sought easier access to everyday items without requiring users to lift items from the top well.

How do I date an oak coffer?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber thickness, hardware types, and decorative styles such as geometric mouldings or carved panels. Earlier seventeenth century examples tend to use heavy frame and panel techniques, while eighteenth century pieces show more refined drawer integration.

Where were these pieces used?

These storage items sat primarily in bedrooms, halls, and parlours of substantial houses to hold heavy textiles, blankets, and personal valuables. Their robust construction allowed them to serve dual purposes as storage units and occasional seating or tables within the home.

Are these pieces made of solid oak?

Historic examples utilise solid English oak throughout the main structural frame, panels, and internal drawer linings. Minor secondary timbers might appear in concealed areas like drawer bases or backboards, but the primary exterior surfaces remain solid oak.
