How are these tables cleaned?

Maintenance requires only warm water and mild soap applied with a damp cloth to preserve the historical surface. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip away the accumulated patina. Regular drying with a soft cloth prevents moisture retention in untreated timber. Natural beeswax can be applied sparingly to nourish dry oak or elm.

Can these tables handle daily dining?

These pieces were originally built for heavy domestic labour and family meals, making them exceptionally durable for modern dining use. Solid timber construction withstands daily weight and frequent movement without structural compromise. Using placemats helps protect historic surfaces from excessive moisture and heat rings. The existing marks and scars simply add to the ongoing history of the timber.

What wood types are most common?

Pine and oak dominate the surviving examples across various centuries. Oak provides exceptional strength for earlier refectory styles, while pine appears frequently in nineteenth-century farmhouse and harvest variants. Elm also occurs in primitive early dining tables, offering a distinct interlocking grain pattern. Each timber species responds differently to age, developing unique surface textures over decades of use.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on examining construction techniques, tool marks left on the underside, and the wear patterns on the legs. Eighteenth-century pieces often display wider plank widths and hand-pegged joinery. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples show standardised machining signs alongside softer pine patinas. Hardware elements like nails and screws further help narrow down the manufacturing decade.
