How are dragon handles secured?

Dragon handles are typically cast as independent bronze elements and securely joined to the main body of the vessel during production. Some incorporate pins or brazed joints hidden beneath the patination. Inspect the join points closely to understand the construction method used by the workshop.

What is champleve enamel?

Champlevé enamel involves carving hollows into the bronze substrate to hold powdered glass pastes that fuse during the firing process. The resulting design sits flush with the surrounding metal. This technique adds brilliant bands of colour to complement the dark bronze body.

Are these vases heavy?

Many examples possess substantial weight, often scaling past three kilograms due to the solid bronze casting methods employed. This heavy metal foundation provides stability for the protruding handles. Lighter decorative variations also exist, particularly those adapted later into table lamps.

How do I date a bronze vase?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, patination characteristics, and historical context such as Meiji period conventions or Victorian import trends. Nineteenth-century examples often carry specific casting traits distinct from earlier periods. Examine the base and interior surface for clues regarding manufacturing age.
