How were these cupboards used historically?

These cabinets served varied domestic and institutional roles, storing books, linen, spices, and household provisions. Wardrobes and linen presses managed clothing storage in bedrooms and dressing rooms. Specialist pieces like spice cupboards and corner units catered to specific domestic needs in kitchens, parlours, and libraries.

How do I care for dark wood furniture?

Maintain timber surfaces by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations. Regular dusting with a soft cloth preserves the polish without chemical buildup. Occasional application of appropriate wax feeds the antique wood, protecting the finish and maintaining the deep brown lustre.

What timbers create the dark brown colour?

Mahogany, oak, walnut, padouk, and rosewood provide the natural dark brown tones seen across the inventory. Over decades and centuries, exposure to light and natural oxidation deepens these wood colours further. Finishes like French polish or wax further enhance the inherent darkness and grain contrast of the timber.
