How do I choose the right size ceiling light?

Scale the fixture to the dimensions of the room and the height of the ceiling, keeping smaller plafonniers for compact spaces and multi-arm chandeliers for larger reception rooms. Check the hanging drop length specified in the details to ensure adequate clearance for movement beneath the fixture.

Were these lights originally wired for electricity?

Many Edwardian and 19th-century examples began life holding candles or gas before being converted for electric bulbs in subsequent eras. Modern adaptations ensure the internal wiring meets contemporary standards while retaining the exterior antique components. Original brass galleries and fittings often house modern lamp holders to maintain historical appearance safely.

How do I clean cut glass fixtures?

Remove delicate glass drops and crystal components carefully for washing in warm soapy water to restore their reflective brilliance. Wipe down the metal brass or bronze frames with a dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patination. Support the fixture firmly from its main frame if cleaning components in situ to prevent strain on the ceiling fixings.

How do I tell an Edwardian piece from a 1930s piece?

Edwardian examples frequently favour brass framing combined with simpler dome plafonniers, star-cut shades, or restrained pendant designs. By contrast, 1930s pieces often introduce bag crystal configurations, silver gilding, and more geometric or elaborate glass drops. Review the listed period markers and stylistic cues, such as Edwardian restraint versus later decorative exuberance, to establish the era of manufacture.
