How do I clean the curved glass?

Use a soft microfibre cloth with a standard glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the wood or ormolu. This prevents moisture from seeping into aged joints or tarnishing metal mounts. Take care around delicate hand-painted panels or gilt surfaces near the glass frame. Gentle, circular motions will remove dust without putting pressure on the curved panes.

Were these cabinets meant for corners?

Most pieces listed here are freestanding bow-front, serpentine, or oval cabinets designed to sit flat against a wall as a focal point. They command space in the room rather than tucking into corners. Some specialised wall cabinets exist, but the larger vitrines rely on all-round light penetration through their curved side and front glass panels.

How are the shelves supported?

Interior shelves in these cabinets typically rest on adjustable metal brackets or wooden notches fitted to the interior uprights. This allows owners to alter shelf heights for different objects. Many period cabinets feature glass shelves to maximise the diffusion of light downward through the cabinet interior.

Are the mounts original?

Mounts on nineteenth-century French pieces are generally cast bronze that was mercury gilded or chemically finished to simulate age. Examining the fit against the wood reveals whether they belong to the piece. Original mounts sit flush with the surrounding veneer, showing consistent patination and wear that matches the rest of the cabinet exterior.
