How do I date a frame?

Dating relies upon examining the timber construction methods, the type of gesso used beneath the gilding, and the fastening techniques visible at the reverse. Older frames often utilise hand-cut joinery and heavy wooden mouldings distinct from later machine-made equivalents. Changes in decorative motifs across Victorian, Georgian, and twentieth-century styles also offer clear chronological indicators for the surround.

Are these frames original to the art?

Many pieces retain their original frames, particularly when the proportions and wear patterns match the age of the central canvas, paper, or textile. Original pairings ensure the aesthetic intent of the period is preserved. Subsequent re-framing did occur historically, making close inspection of the rebate and fixings essential for establishing whether art and frame started life together.

How should I hang heavy gilt frames?

Substantial wooden frames require secure wall fixings distributed evenly across heavy-duty picture wire or D-rings screwed directly into the structural timber of the frame. Professional wall anchors suited to your specific wall type prevent slipping or structural failure. Positioning pieces away from direct sunlight and damp conditions protects both the gilded surface and the internal artwork from deterioration.

What is the best way to clean gilt?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather brush or a clean microfibre cloth removes surface particles without damaging delicate gold leaf or painted cream finishes. Avoid liquid cleaners, harsh chemicals, and excessive rubbing. If deeper cleaning becomes necessary, consult a professional conservator to prevent stripping the historic gilding or disturbing the underlying gesso layers.
